More than half of the world's population now live in cities, and that figure is predicted to rise to 70% by 2050. As populations increase rapidly, they place greater demands on the city infrastructures that deliver vital services such as housing, transportation, healthcare, education and public safety. Therefore, smart growth of our urban areas is essential to meet the growing needs of communities.

The UK Coalition government has championed localism through its legislative agenda.

Councils have been given more flexibility over budgets, Regional Development Agencies have been disbanded, Local Enterprise Partnerships have been created and a Regional Growth Fund has been established.

This legislation has the potential to be the main driver of the smart cities movement in the UK, devolving greater powers over areas like housing, transport and economic development to local level.

Smart Cities 2011 will bring together forward-thinking Local Authorities, Utilities, Universities and private sector providers to shape the collaborative and innovative partnerships that will be crucial in generating thriving local and national economies, and delivering more efficient, sustainable cities.
